The Riverside Consolidated School chess team (of which I am the coach) excelled once again at the District 2 chess tournament. Out of a team of seven we have three going on to Provincials: a 2nd place in Kindergarten, a first in grade one and a second in grade 5. We also had a fourth place finish in grade four and the other three had very strong days. We come to play.

Field of Sunflowers Comic - No Chess This Week

No chess this week - SUNFLOWERS instead. This is a project that I have been working on since May, 2009. I am going for a field of sunflowers and I have had every professional and amateur artist I meet contribute a sunflower to the field. I got away from it for a while, but it needs to be finished - I'll tell you why when it is actually completed.

Tim drew the first one (I'll get you his last name - He's always just been "Tim"), the next is local artist Jennifer Aikman-Smith, then we have ME, then our good friend and site designer Eric Dyck, and finally, professional comic artist Nick Bradshaw.

Thanks for the help on this personally special project.

I am going through the perfect storm of not-getting-up-new-comic-ness: report cards due + main computer down with a virus, which means the scanner is down + did I mention that report cards are due?

Anyway, the drought should soon be over. I have an oficial Grand Opening coming up with five days of themed gag strips (I can't wait - I'm already giggling) and then on to new chess learnin'.

How in the world am I supposed to draw a rook shrugging?

On to the ROOKS. I had just gotten to this point almost a year ago when I decided to restart the whole thing. Few strips survived the reboot, but the next 4-5 rook strips were drawn last October/November and 2-3 of them were published. While I hope I have improved from a year ago, after a little tweeking I think the old rook strips will hold their own.

Chess Comic Mugs!!!

New strip will be along tomorrow, but for now - MUGS!

I just opened up a Cafe Press shop and I am currently selling the "Trash Talking" strip on two mug sizes and a metal water bottle. This design is a temporary one and I will be doing some more very soon. If there is any interest I will try out some t-shirts as well (at least one for me).

I kept the pieces white for the mug instead of the black I used for the strip. I wasn't sure how the black would look. When I create a design just for merchandise I will make sure the black chessmen have features that will stand out.

Since it is my first try at this I kept the mark-up real low.

The King and Pawn Game 1: Thanks For Coming Out - 031

A new arc of comic starts here. Originally I had introduced the Rook after the pawns, but then I realized that I wanted to do the King and Pawn game, so when I scrapped my previous 15 or so comics and re-did everything last Novemeber I decided I would switch the king in for the rook.

Ha! I just noticed that I gave the King the Queen's crown. Oh well. It looks pretty good. Maybe I should use it instead.

Capped off the report card / end of the school year madness with a four day holiday with the family (nothing fancy - we got off-season rates for a cottage on PEI - it was nice).

I promise new chess info strips this week coming. I want to get out of the Kings and move on.

Anyone get the movie reference? I've included the original strip I drew just because I felt pretty silly making John Wayne a rook instead of a knight (John Wayne = cowboy = horse = knight...duh).

I will be at Gamezilla in Moncton, NB on Saturday, May 2nd for Free Comic Book Day, my favourite day after Christmas and Easter but before my birthday and the last day of school.

This year I will be giving away copies of The Chess Comic Sampler I printed up for the occasion. It is two sheets of paper printed double sided and "saddle stapled" (I think it is called). It has most of the first dozen strips and a few out of sequence at the end. I think it turned out pretty well and I hope I get some takers. Gamezilla, my comic shop, has been giving me a table on FCBD for the last couple of years because of my other website comicsintheclassroom.net. I know how to talk to parents, teachers and librarians and I come stocked with a whole lot of younger reader books that the store can order but doesn't carry. I will be giving out copies of the Chess Comic and my grade 3 class' comic; I'll be schmoozing with interested parents and drawing next week's chess comic.

It is a day full of awesome!

Comic ontime! Yay!

I think that this is actually the oldest comic that I have up now. Even though I have never posted it, this is the last comic I made before taking everything down and starting over.

I just found THIS. From what I can tell, this book Learn How to Play Chess by Reading the Comic Book came out after my comic strip did. Not that it matters. Isn't it funny how two people created such a similar sounding product at the same time. And we're both from Canada! Life is funny that way. i was hoping to find out some more information, but I can't even find a contact for the creator. From the cover image it is clear that our comics are completely different in visual style and tone, but I would really like to get a look.

So stop reading and go practice already.

I See What U Did There - bonus comic

When I have a song stuck in my head the only way I can get rid of it is to sing it out loud. Similarly, I had these comics stuck in my head and the only way I was going to get rid of them was to draw them. These came to me on Monday after spending all of my Snow-Day free time reading the newly discovered webcomic “Laugh Out Loud Cats”. The strip follows the single panel adventures of two hobo cats that are drawn in a Walt Kelly POGO type style but who talk in computer shorthand. It shouldn’t be funny, but it is. “I see what u did there” and “UR doing it wrong” are recurring jokes in the strip, made funny by their frequent use.

This is one of my favorites.

This is a bonus fill-in comic that I finished up just before the flu hit everyone in my house but me (which kept me from finishing this week's strip). Chess Comic #17 will be up in a couple of days.

Last week I wrote: "Big chess tournament this weekend for School District 2 in New Brunswick. Will I keep up my streak of sending 2 kids on to the Provincials? It is 5 years strong so far."

Well, we did it again! 2 students from my school are on their way to the Provincials this April. When my school comes to play, we come to play. Even those that don't make it any further and even those that don't win a game know how to play and put forth a solid showing. Good job team.

Oh, and one of my kids even got her picture in the paper in the article about the tournament!
